Understanding Korean Streaming Platforms

♫​ Digitals have the biggest percentage contribution in music shows with an average of 50%. South Korean digital streaming platforms, such as Melon, Flo, Genie and Bugs, are crucial to the success of K-pop groups for several reasons:

1. Chart rankings-  Streaming data from these platforms is used to compile the weekly music charts in South Korea, such as the Circle Chart and the Hanteo Chart. High chart rankings are important for the visibility and reputation of K-pop groups, as they indicate popularity and success which can lead to more opportunities for Stray Kids.
2. End of Year Nominations- Chart rankings from the charts that are also used to win Music Shows are also used in Nominations for significant and notable awards in South Korea.
3. Sales revenue- Streaming is also a significant source of revenue for K-pop groups, as they earn royalties for each stream. Digital sales, including streaming and downloads, accounted for over 90% of the music industry's revenue in South Korea in 2020.
4. Fan engagement- Streaming platforms provide K-pop fans with a convenient way to access and support their favorite groups' music. Fans can create playlists, share music on social media, and participate in streaming campaigns to boost chart rankings.
5. Global impact- The success of K-pop groups on South Korean streaming platforms can also have a ripple effect on their popularity and success in other countries. For example, high chart rankings in South Korea can attract attention from international media and fans, leading to increased exposure and opportunities for the group.

Overall, the importance of South Korean digital streaming platforms to K-pop groups is evident in the way they directly impact Music Shows and who wins, the charts as well as Music Shows wins increase brand exposure and additional opportunities for Stay Kids and individual members.

STAYs are also aware through the variety of interactions we have with the members as well as behind the scenes content that The Kids do check these charts and rankings and see the direct impact of their hard work right there at home.

Each K-Streaming platform has their own chart ranking Artist, Albums, & Songs in real time, Daily, Weekly & Monthly! The table below shows a overview for the tracking for each.

Realtime chart	Hourly - counts 1 unique listener per hour. Chart freezes from 1am-7am, but streams during this time still count for the next chart update
Daily chart	24 hours - Updates at Midnight KST
Weekly chart	7 days - Updates on Mondays

To ensure we correctly direct our energy where it's needed the most, having an understanding of how KCharts work helps us ensure we understand where we need to direct our energy. For example; we know that 4 out of the 5 Music Shows Stray Kids promote on use CIRCLE Chart to track their data they apply to their scoring systems. We also know that Circle Charts are weighed heavily in favor of DOWNLOADS, so if Stray Kids have another Friday release the fastest & most productive way for STAYs to chart Stray Kids high enough to boost their digital points for 1st week of promotions & increase their chances at winning music shows would be to push MASS Downloading on K-Platforms on as many accounts as possible!

This is just one example and is in no way a strategy, always follow our Fanbases for any strategies or scheduled mass purchases, downloads or votings.

♫ KEY TERMS TO KNOW WHEN TALKING ABOUT K-STREAMING

• UNIQUE STREAMS - number of times a song is played by a unique account during the tracking period (hourly, daily,..)
• TOTAL STREAMS - number of times a song has been played (does not matter if it is the same account multiple times during a tracking period)
• DOWNLOADS - number of downloads by unique accounts
• UNIQUE LISTENERS - number of unique accounts that played a song (counted only ONCE per account)

Charts count the unique listeners & downloads over the tracking period. Only 1 DL is counted per account, and 1 unique listener per tracking period (playing the same song 2x in 1 hour → only 1 count for real time chart. However, total streams add to overall digital score).

• UNVERIFIED Accounts - can no longer be created. Though, if you still have accounts from pre 2021 can still be used for streaming and loaded with passes! These accounts can’t do downloads, for that a verification is required. There are some sellers who will verify existing accounts but if you really want a verified account, buying a new one might be recommended, since it’s less expensive.
• ​Verified accounts are required for down loading. These accounts can be used for streaming and downloading. They can be charged with streaming passes as well as genie cash to download songs!

​♫ K-Streaming Myths & Stigmas......

•  "K-Streaming is hard, I'll just stick with YouTube and Spotify." 

I get it, a STAY looks at a guide & says ok let's see what this is all about & instantly you see there are 20-30 steps NOT IN English so there's no language options, and hundreds of things that looks complicated and next thing you are overwhelmed just thinking about it before you even gave yourself a chance to how easy it really is, you say no. How do I know this?? Cause the team here are STAYs too and we all started out in the same place, some maybe had a lil experience in K-pop before becoming a STAY but all of us start out somewhere knowing nothing & it took me almost a year to put all the anxiety aside & just try...for Stray Kids! 

I realized within the 1st hour that Streaming on Kplatforms was SO EASY I literally laughed at myself for waiting so long. Let me explain, when we stream on YouTube or Spotify or even Apple music, we have to follow very strict guidelines to ensure we are streaming properly and nothing is getting filtered out essentially wasting time, we rotate playlists every few hours, have to manual search song after song, make sure we constantly interact, well on Kplatforms are more passive, you follow the steps to set up your account most of the time it takes less than 5 minutes & if you need help we have LOTS of STAYs available. Just use the HT #QuestionRacha on twitter saying you are stuck & a member of the team set up specifically to look for STAYs who need it will reach out & walk you thru it step my step together if you need it. Once your account it set up; buy the song(s), download it, grab one of the one-click playlists that the K-Base pre-makes for ISTAYS & our fanbases spread shortly after release, Press play and check on it in 10-12 hours! THATS IT!

Then for 30 days just check on it every 10 -12 hours, it's literally that easy, the part everyone thinks is hard is getting started but once you do that, you will never look back! Be sure if you are using a LIMITED streaming pass to check how to set up your playlists and follow guidelines accordingly,  the ones shared by K-bases are usually for unlimited passes.

• "It's so expensive"

It can be, depending on where you are in the world, what is pocket change to some is an electric bill or School tuition fees to others, so I can't tell you it's not when I don't know what 'expensive' means to you. And in no way would STAYs or Stray Kids want anyone sacrificing anything important to purchase a streaming pass, which is why we do fundraising to help purchase accounts and passes so that dedicated STAYs don't have to and can still do their part in Stray Kids Success. What I can tell you is that for an account for 1 month with unlimited streams, with funds to purchase 1 song download of the title track, it costs less than a physical Stray Kids album!

​If you find that financially it's just not something you can manage then apply to one of the teams that STAYS who can afford that little extra donate to so that in some way we are all doing our part. Ask a STAY friend if you can learn on their account this CB & help them stream. Are you a multi, do you know a friend in another fandom NOT using their acct while Stary Kids are having a CB, borrow their acct and just get a pass for it, and return the account back after comeback ends. There are plenty of ways to find solutions to bumps in the road when you look for them.
